Can Bangkok’s former “Brothel King” bring political tension to a happy ending?
…
Playing godfather to a brothel empire may seem an odd springboard to becoming an anti-corruption crusader. But any Thai living in Bangkok can recount Chuvit’s path to fame, chronicled in soap opera detail by the Thai press.
In the early 2000s, Chuvit began publicly accusing senior police officers of milking him for an alleged $350,000-plus in monthly bribes. It was protection money, Chuvit claimed. [Brothel bosses can escape prostitution laws through a flimsy legal sleight-of-hand: They rent out masseurs but claim ignorance of in-room activities.]
…
People still think of you as the “Brothel King.” But in 2005 you smashed a jacuzzi bathtub in front of parliament to show you’re out of that business. Are you still connected in any way to the massage trade?

Five grenades exploded in the heart of Bangkok’s business district on Thursday, killing at least one person and wounding 75 as rival groups of protesters demonstrated and insulted each another across a makeshift barricade.
The conflict has its roots in social divisions between the mostly poor and rural red shirts and an urban middle class that had not been active on the streets until about a week ago.
The antagonism between them was displayed by a pro-government protester who made a rude gesture towards the red shirts on Thursday as she stood in front of a misspelt placard in English reading “Uneducate people.”
The explosions, several of which occurred on the platform of an elevated train, scattered shrapnel through crowds that included foreign tourists, sending people fleeing in panic into shops and restaurants. They threatened to ignite wider violence after more than six weeks of protests that have sought to bring down the government and force a new election.

Looking for entertainment? Despite the proximity of shouting Red Shirt leaders over loudspeakers at Lumpini Park, Silom Road is almost back to normal for tourists looking for night entertainment. Prostitutes are waiting again for customers in Patpong alleys and seem unimpressed by army troops patrolling in the area. Irish pubs are welcoming expats again looking for a cool beer in front of a giant TV screen broadcasting football or car racing. Even in the worst of the turmoil ten days ago, gay venues never closed down. Bars and discos with transvestites performing as usual were and are all open. Only Patpong central night market was closed, as it could have been an easy target for casualties. But Suan Lum Night Bazaar with its wide choice of handicraft objects continues to operate, despite some outlets being closed. This is finally what makes Bangkok so special: the capital has the ability to adapt to anything, for better or worse.
