More than 40 countries have issued travel warnings regarding Bangkok. While the Canadian embassy in Bangkok is not yet telling tourists to avoid the city, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website warns that “Canadians should exercise caution, follow advice of local authorities, remain informed of developments, monitor local media, and, should violence erupt, remain indoors.”
Some tourists, of course, remain in Bangkok, even if they largely steer clear of the showdown around Silom Road. “I think we have the attitude that you have to keep living your life,” said Gina Neunez, a 30-year-old Australian currently in Bangkok on her honeymoon.
She and her new husband obviously weren’t the only ones who take that approach. When they tried to make a reservation at a popular restaurant in an area of Bangkok far from the Red Shirt protest site, they were told it would be a two-day wait for a table.
