Many of the protesters come from the country’s rural northeast, but they have been supported by thousands of working-class Bangkok residents, who bring their families along in the evening to listen to speeches and music broadcast from the stage.

The protesters seem to have settled in for the long haul. They have set up barber shops, massage parlours, medical clincs and even basic sleeping arrangements using mats and canvas roofs.

The demonstrations turned violent on the evening of April 10, when army units backed by armoured personnel carriers tried and failed to move the protesters from a site in old Bangkok.
